XDD, LLC DISCUSSES ISCO REMEDIATION AT ILLINOIS MANUFACTURED GAS PLANT FORUM
October 14, 2009
XDD president and remediation expert Michael Marley, L.E.P. will be discussing application strategies for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) at the Illinois Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Forum on Thursday, October 15, in Bloomington, IL. The one-day conference, which is organized by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and hosted by both Ameren and ERM, will feature two presentations by Mr. Marley concerning the applicability of ISCO treatment systems at former MGP sites.
The specific topics to be covered by XDD include:
ISCO Application of Activated Persulfate on MGP Residuals
Not long ago, XDD completed a two-year study sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to evaluate the effectiveness of ISCO technologies to remediate MGP residuals and to develop guidance principles for project managers who are considering the potential effectiveness of ISCO. As part of this study, XDD applied activated persulfate at a former MGP site in New York. This presentation will discuss the specific design parameters of the ISCO treatment performed at the site, as well as the reductions achieved in BTEX, TPH and PAH concentrations after a single application of activated persulfate.
Drivers for Successful Application of ISCO at Former MGP Sites
ISCO has several beneficial characteristics for application at MGP sites. The primary benefits include an ability to degrade the wide suite of contaminants at MGP sites, cost effectiveness for a variety of conditions, the ability to treat areas that are inaccessible or too deep to consider excavation, and relatively rapid reaction times, on the order of hours to months. This presentation will focus on an examination of the key parameters driving the success and costs of applying ISCO at former MGP sites. Methods to estimate the mass and distribution of the MGP residuals and to model the necessary degree of cleanup for success will also be discussed.
XDD encourages any individuals who will not be attending the Illinois MGP Forum and who are interested in learning more about ISCO technologies or other MGP remediation issues to contact Mike Marley at marley@xdd-llc.com or (800) 486-3575.
