Platform Presentation Details:

Avoiding the Epic Fail – PFAS Treatability Testing will:

  • Discuss the role of treatability studies in remedial design.
  • Present treatability case studies illustrating the importance of appropriate testing and design.
  • Present a few successful treatability case studies previously performed on PFAS.
  • Present preliminary results of treatability testing research underway for PFAS sorption and destruction technologies.
  • The presentation will also provide:
    • Approximate study costs and test durations.
    • The types of PFAS remediation technologies that are amenable to treatability testing.
    • The types of information that treatability studies can provide for different technologies tested.
The presentation will be brought to you by XDD Environmental’s Principal Michael Marley.

Workshop Details:

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Remediation Workshop

PFAS are contaminants of emerging concern increasingly detected in ground, surface, and drinking water. These synthetic chemicals are associated with a variety of products including fire fighting foams, carpeting, non-stick cookware, and food wrappings.

This workshop will cover PFAS physical-chemical properties relevant to remediation and ex-situ and in-situ options for remediating PFAS in soil and water.

Knowledge and experience in PFAS remediation is evolving fast. The workshop will present the most up-to-date information about remediating PFAS using physical, chemical, and biological technologies, covering both technologies that show promise as well as those that are not expected to be effective. Recently developed technologies using advanced carbon, synthetic resins, alternative natural adsorbents, and advanced oxidation, among others, will be described.

Participants can use this understanding to identify technologies that are likely to be appropriate for a particular site early on in the characterization process. Integrating key data collection for site-specific remedial options into the characterization phase can minimize project costs and schedule by reducing the number of rounds of fieldwork.

The workshop will include the following presenters:

PRESENTER and SPONSOR
Michael Marley, M.Sc., CT LEP
XDD Environmental

Mike Marley, president and co-founder of XDD Environmental, has over 35 years of experience in environmental and civil engineering. He has been at the forefront of developing design and application protocols for soil vapor extraction, sparging and in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technologies. Mike is commonly used by both private industry and regulatory agencies to conduct peer reviews and testimony services both nationally and internationally. He reviews articles for several remediation journals and has published numerous articles and written chapters in several monographs and books on in-situ remediation.

PRESENTER
Ellen Moyer, Ph.D, P.E.
Greenvironment, LLC

As an environmental engineer with 30 years of experience, Ellen Moyer works on projects for federal agencies and Fortune 500 companies to clean up hazardous waste sites contaminated by a wide array of harmful chemicals. Moyer has an M.S. in environmental engineering, and a Ph.D. in civil engineering, and is a registered professional engineer. Moyer has authored three books “MTBE Remediation Handbook” and the just released “Our Earth, Our Species, Our Selves: How to Thrive While Creating a Sustainable World”

PRESENTER
Dr. Raymond G. Ball, P.E., L.S.P.
EnChem Engineering, Inc.

Dr. Ball, an environmental engineer, has 35 years of national experience with environmental issues related to organic and inorganic pollutants in the environment. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Licensed Site Professional in Massachusetts. Dr. Ball has served as a hazardous waste consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on various remediation projects at military bases throughout the U.S. He has managed major remediation projects for industrial and government clients.
